Researching, Analyzing and Discussing Three Film Openings

As I mentioned in my previous genre post, my team and I realized that our earlier mock draft actually fit a different genre better than we expected. Because of that, we decided to shift our project in that direction. Our goal now is to create an opening that feels efficient, well‑crafted, and strong enough to grab the audience’s attention right from the start.

To help shape our ideas, I looked at several pieces of media and focused on three film openings that really influenced the direction of our project. These examples stood out because of how they use suspense, pacing, and visual storytelling, and we want to bring those same qualities into our own work

Se7en Intro Credits

The opening of Se7en creates a dark, unsettling mood right away with fast cuts, close‑ups, and disturbing visuals that keep the audience tense. Instead of showing the killer’s face, the scene focuses on their hands as they write in notebooks, cut photos, and prepare strange materials, which makes the viewer feel curious and uneasy. The editing is quick and jumpy, and the harsh, scratchy sounds in the background make everything feel even more intense.

Even without any dialogue, the opening shows the film’s themes of obsession, secrecy, and danger through its visuals. It grabs the audience immediately and makes it clear that something is very wrong, which is exactly what a strong Thriller opening aims to do.

The Dark Knight opens with a sharp crime‑thriller sequence that immediately creates tension, chaos, and moral uncertainty. The Joker’s bank heist is paced carefully, with each masked robber taking out the one before him, which builds a sense of unpredictability and psychological danger instead of relying on anything supernatural. he scene mixes action with classic thriller elements, like rising stakes, shifting power, and a villain who controls the situation through manipulation rather than force. This opening makes it clear that the film is an action‑crime thriller with psychological depth, setting a darkker and more realistic tone than most superhero movies

The opening of Final Destination: Bloodlines starts with a group of friends having a fun, carefree night, not realizing anything bad is coming. Bright lighting, upbeat music, and quick shots of them laughing and dancing create a relaxed, energetic vibe. As the scene goes on, small hints of tension appear through uneasy camera angles and close‑ups that make it feel like something isn’t right.

Everything changes fast once the first sign of danger hits. The mood shifts from fun to frightening in seconds. When the disaster begins, the editing becomes chaotic, with fast cuts, loud sounds, and panicked reactions that make the moment feel unpredictable able and overwhelming. Even before the characters understand what’s happening, the opening already shows the film’s themes of fate, fear, and sudden tragedy. It immediately pulls the audience in and sets up a story filled with suspense and shocking moments.

    

Thriller Genre

For this part of the portfolio, we decided to change our film idea, so it fits the Thriller genre more effectively. The Thriller genre focuses on building tension, suspense, and uncertainty, which works better with the direction our story is now taking. Thriller films rely on creating a sense of danger and anticipation, keeping the audience engaged through unexpected twists and high‑stakes situations. These films often explore themes like fear, mystery, and psychological pressure, using pacing and atmosphere to maintain constant suspense.

Thrillers typically use tight framing, shadows, and fast or unpredictable editing to highlight the intensity of the story. The tone is usually tense and gripping, aiming to keep viewers on edge as the characters face threats or uncover hidden truths. When it comes to marketing, Thrilller films often use dark, dramatic imagery and trailers that tease the central mystery without revealing too much. This helps position the film as excitinf.

Thriller films usually appeal to audiences around the age of 15–40 who enjoy fast‑paced, suspense‑driven stories that focus on danger, mystery, and psychological tension.

Psycho is a strong example of the Thriller genre because it builds tension through mystery, suspense, and psychological uncertainty. The film follows Marion Crane and later Norman Bates as the story slowly reveals hidden motives, unsettling behavior, and a growing sense of danger. Its use of isolated settings, dramatic lighting, and unpredictable plot twists creates constant suspense and keeps the audience on edge.

The Dark Knight is a strong example of the Thriller genre because it builds constant tension through danger, moral conflict, and psychological pressure. The film follows Batman as he confronts the Joker, whose chaotic and unpredictable actions create suspense throughout the story. Its dark visuals, fast pacing, and high‑stakes situations match key Thriller conventions, while the intense performances and close‑ups highlight the fear, tension, and emotional strain driving the narrative.

Conclusion. 

Laying out this full timeline gives me a clear path to follow and keeps every stage of the project organized. By breaking the work into weekly goals, I can stay on track, avoid falling behind, and make sure each part of the film opening gets the attention it needs. Sticking to this plan will help me work efficiently and finish the project at the level I expect from myself.

Transition into The Portfolio Project.

 The Portfolio Project is a project created by Cambridge that requires individuals to create a two-minute original opening for a film. It has to include professional-style titles, original visuals, sound and full production credits. Each student will need to create around three blogs per week documenting all research, planning and production. Students then finish with a creative critical reflection answering four required questions about conventions, audience, skills, and technology. 

When my class was first introduced to the portfolio project, I felt confused and a bit anxious about what the next few months would look like. Time management has never been my strongest skill, and balancing this assignment with the heavy workload from my other classes made the project feel overwhelming at first. This means I have to adjust my time management better and do my schoolwork earlier. Fortunately, we’re allowed to work with partners for this project, and that immediately helped calm my nerves. I’m working with the same teammates from a previous assignment where we earned an admirable grade, and that experience showed me how well we collaborate. We put in a lot of hard work and were rewarded for it, so I’m hoping we can replicate that success this time as well.

Me and my partners surprisingly picked the same two genre's we wanted to do and that was Action and Drama. This made it easier to brainstorm ideas and feel confident about the direction of our project. We made an outline of our film, organizing key roles such as who the actors, editor, director, writer and even created a draft.

Our draft is to create a tragic drama opening of a possible flashback of 2 friends or siblings who share the same goal, to play professionally in a sport such as soccer (Premier League, Serie A) or basketball (NBA). One of the friends/brothers tragically dies and the other dedicates himself to make it professionally for tribute for his brother. We are planning to make most of the opening a flashback of then playing around, practicing together and some conflicts then in the final seconds a cut to reality of the living brother. In this film opening, our goal is to build suspense, realism and make it seem that the story is actually going to start. 

To conclude, the Portfolio Project seems interesting and entertaining to do. Fortunately, me and my class have projects preparing us for this so I believe will that I will manage.

Portfolio Project Genre #2

Drama Genre

The following genre that I prefer for the portfolio project is Drama. Drama films are also one of the most popular genres, and they're not as difficult to film then other genres like Action. Drama films tend to rely on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Dramatic themes play a large role in the plot as well. These dramatic themes are taken from intense, real-life issues. Drama films aim to tell an honest story of human struggles.

The narratives in Drama often explore relationships, moral dilemmas, personal struggles and social issues, using everyday setting to ground the story in authencity. The tone is typically serious and reflective, aiming to create empathy and emotional connection with the audience. Drama films use a narrative image that highlights emotion, usually a close-up of a character in conflict or deep thought. When marketing, Drama films focus mostly on character-driven posters with emotionally intense trailers. Similar to Action genre, Drama movies tend to have popular actors and realistic themes.

Drama films typically appeal to audiences around the age (15-40) who enjoy realistic, emotional and character driven stories.

Forrest Gump is a strong example of the Drama genre because it follows a character through emotional challenges, personal growth, and real-life situations. The film shows Forrest Gump's      journey through love, loss, friendship, and identity, using realistic settings and sincere performances to create empathy. Its serious themes, including trauma, social change, and resilience, match the main conventions of Drama, while the use of close‑ups and the expression of the acting helps highlight the emotional depth of the story.

Another well‑known Drama film is The Godfather, which focuses on family conflict, personal responsibility, and the cost of power. The story follows Michael Corleone as he transforms from a outsider into the leader of his family, showing how his choices affect his relationships. The film uses realistic settings, strong emotions, and a serious tone to highlight the dramatic themes that define the genre, making it one of the most recognized Drama films of all time.

Portfolio Project Genre #1

The Research of Action

Today, my class and I received information that we are beginning the portfolio project, which is part of the Cambridge exam grade. Our task is to create and record a two-minute opening sequence for a film and produce it with maximum efficiency. However, before we start making our opening, we must first choose a genre.

My first and favorite choice for a genre is Action. Action films are among the most popular genres in the world, but they're not easy to produce. Action includes multiple scenes that give the audience a sense of adrenaline and fast-paced stunts with multiple crosscuts to assist in intensity and excitement. Viewers who enjoy action films prefer fast‑paced storytelling, intense conflict, and intense physical stunts. These films usually feature a clear hero versus villain dynamic or high‑stakes scenarios that keep the audience hooked. With our movie opening we plan to achieve these types of audience.

The Matrix is a great example of the action genre. Action movies like this includes rapid editing, multiple tilts and pans, strong sound effects and sometimes bold sound effects to keep the engaged. The Matrix specifically includes multiple fight scenes, multiple effects such as explosions and bullet impacts. Studios usually use eye-catching posters and popular actors to draw attention to the audience about the film. They also use exciting and intense-packed trailers to highlight the biggest stunts and most intense moments

Mission: Impossible is also one of the most well‑known action franchises of all time. Instead of trying to recreate a Matrix‑style opening, Mission: Impossible is easier to work with because it doesn’t rely on futuristic or impossible techniques. The film uses fast pacing, tension, and intense stunts similar to The Matrix, but in a more realistic setting. The franchise also includes Tom Cruise as its lead actor, whose reputation for performing his own stunts creates excitement for the franchise.
