Drama Genre

The following genre that I prefer for the portfolio project is Drama. Drama films are also one of the most popular genres, and they're not as difficult to film then other genres like Action. Drama films tend to rely on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. Dramatic themes play a large role in the plot as well. These dramatic themes are taken from intense, real-life issues. Drama films aim to tell an honest story of human struggles.

The narratives in Drama often explore relationships, moral dilemmas, personal struggles and social issues, using everyday setting to ground the story in authencity. The tone is typically serious and reflective, aiming to create empathy and emotional connection with the audience. Drama films use a narrative image that highlights emotion, usually a close-up of a character in conflict or deep thought. When marketing, Drama films focus mostly on character-driven posters with emotionally intense trailers. Similar to Action genre, Drama movies tend to have popular actors and realistic themes.

Drama films typically appeal to audiences around the age (15-40) who enjoy realistic, emotional and character driven stories.

Forrest Gump is a strong example of the Drama genre because it follows a character through emotional challenges, personal growth, and real-life situations. The film shows Forrest Gump's      journey through love, loss, friendship, and identity, using realistic settings and sincere performances to create empathy. Its serious themes, including trauma, social change, and resilience, match the main conventions of Drama, while the use of close‑ups and the expression of the acting helps highlight the emotional depth of the story.

Another well‑known Drama film is The Godfather, which focuses on family conflict, personal responsibility, and the cost of power. The story follows Michael Corleone as he transforms from a outsider into the leader of his family, showing how his choices affect his relationships. The film uses realistic settings, strong emotions, and a serious tone to highlight the dramatic themes that define the genre, making it one of the most recognized Drama films of all time.

Portfolio Project Genre #1

The Research of Action

Today, my class and I received information that we are beginning the portfolio project, which is part of the Cambridge exam grade. Our task is to create and record a two-minute opening sequence for a film and produce it with maximum efficiency. However, before we start making our opening, we must first choose a genre.

My first and favorite choice for a genre is Action. Action films are among the most popular genres in the world, but they're not easy to produce. Action includes multiple scenes that give the audience a sense of adrenaline and fast-paced stunts with multiple crosscuts to assist in intensity and excitement. Viewers who enjoy action films prefer fast‑paced storytelling, intense conflict, and intense physical stunts. These films usually feature a clear hero versus villain dynamic or high‑stakes scenarios that keep the audience hooked. With our movie opening we plan to achieve these types of audience.

The Matrix is a great example of the action genre. Action movies like this includes rapid editing, multiple tilts and pans, strong sound effects and sometimes bold sound effects to keep the engaged. The Matrix specifically includes multiple fight scenes, multiple effects such as explosions and bullet impacts. Studios usually use eye-catching posters and popular actors to draw attention to the audience about the film. They also use exciting and intense-packed trailers to highlight the biggest stunts and most intense moments

Mission: Impossible is also one of the most well‑known action franchises of all time. Instead of trying to recreate a Matrix‑style opening, Mission: Impossible is easier to work with because it doesn’t rely on futuristic or impossible techniques. The film uses fast pacing, tension, and intense stunts similar to The Matrix, but in a more realistic setting. The franchise also includes Tom Cruise as its lead actor, whose reputation for performing his own stunts creates excitement for the franchise.

My group, which includes Christian, Emmanuel, and Kai, recorded a music marketing project in the garage and at the lake. We documented our planning process and worked together to create a clear and engaging video.

For our music marketing project, my group was assigned four songs within our genre and to record a music video representing it. Although challenging, we chose The Righteous One by The Orwells because it reflected our shared ideas and compromise. We named our band The Strangers, inspired by Stranger Things, a series on Netflix that the group all enjoys and felt captured the mood of our song. After finalizing the name and music choice, we organized a schedule calendar to arrange each member’s responsibilities. My tasks include editing and designing merchandise, which I plan to begin right after Thanksgiving break. We were also brainstormingof creating merchandise such as shirts, posters, and designs with words that represent my name, so our brand feels more personal and connected to the audience. We scheduled our recording sessions for that same week to ensure the project stays on track and each member contributes successfully.

                                 How We Developed Nova Skye

🎯 Summary of Our Activity Goals

Our goal was to create a multimedia mise-en-scene that brings a fictional character to life using visual, audio, and physical elements. We were given a prompt about a former singer who loves storytelling and lives in a cozy apartment filled with records and memories. Our challenge was to design a character and build a station that reflects her personality, lifestyle, and emotional depth. We wanted the audience to feel like they were stepping into her world.

🌟🩵🎤 The Summary and Development of Our Character

Nova Skye is a retired singer with a sharp wit and a love for storytelling, living in a cozy apartment filled with records, books, and memories. Our group developed her as a middle-aged woman with hazel eyes, tan skin, and wavy blonde hair streaked with silver, wearing a blue sundress, glasses, and gold jewelry. We chose the name Nova Skye because it felt dreamy and musical, fitting her calm, reflective personality. Her space is warm and inviting, with soft lighting, nature sounds, and personal touches like a record player, microphone, and awards that hint at her past. She listens to songs like Put Your Records on and Riptide and often shares life lessons with younger neighbors. Through mood boards and props we brought her to life as a character who represents creativity, comfort, and connection.

🎨 🎬What We Created to Illustrate Her Character

To represent Nova Skye, we created mood boards showing her favorite music, fashion, and home decor. These helped us visualize what she likes and what she does. We imagined her giving advice to a neighbor and even created a trivia activity where people had to finish the lyrics to one of her favorite songs. We chose tracks like Put Your Records on by Corinne Bailey and Riptide by Vance Joy to reflect her vibe. We also included props like a microphone, vinyl records, and an award to show her past as a performer.

🚉🖥️💻Description of How We Organized the Character Station

We set up the station to feel like Nova’s apartment. We covered all four tables with a blanket to create a cozy atmosphere and placed a pillow in the center. We added books, phonographs, and posters to show her interests. Three computers were used, one displayed her mood board, another for trivia, and the other played a “Day in the Life” video and karaoke. We printed out visuals and used soft lighting to make the space feel warm. The room was green because that color represents calmness, which fits Nova’s personality.

🤝 Reflection on Our Group’s Process

We started developing Nova Skye by brainstorming ideas as a group. We wanted a name that sounded musical and unique, and we all agreed on Nova Skye. Then we imagined her as a middle-aged woman who used to be a singer and now shares stories and advice with her neighbors. We chose her look, style, and personality based on the prompt and added details like her favorite songs, cozy apartment, and personal items to make her feel real.

                                           What Is Sci-Fi?

As technology improves, I wanted to explore Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), which is a film genre that mixes future ideas, cool inventions, and big questions into exciting stories.

Science Fiction is a genre that explores futuristic ideas, advanced technology, space travel, and sometimes aliens or time machines. These movies often ask big questions like “What If?” and help us imagine what the future could look like. Sci-fi films are exciting because they mix science with storytelling, and they often show how technology can change people’s lives for the better or worse.

Content:

1. Futuristic Technology: Science fiction movies often show inventions that don’t exist yet. Examples like flying cars, robots with feelings, or machines that can travel through time. These ideas help build exciting stories and make us think about what could happen in the future.

Example: In Back to the Future, a scientist builds a time-traveling car. The movie shows how changing the past can affect the future.

Example: In Ready Player One, people use a digital headset and full-body gear to live inside a virtual world called the OASIS. They go to school, play games, and even earn money 

2. Space Travel and Aliens: Many sci-fi films take place in space or on other planets. They often include aliens who are sometimes friendly or dangerous. These stories explore what it might be like to meet life from another world.

    

 Example: In E.T., a young boy helps a lost alien get back home. The movie mixes science fiction with friendship and emotion.

Example: In the movie Alien Covenant, a hostile alien life form haunts and hunts a group of explorers seeking for a new human colony.

3.Scientific Ideas and Big Questions: Science fiction may sometimes ask deep questions about life, identity, and the future. It can explore what it means to be human, whether we can change our destiny, and how much we should trust technology.

Example: In The Matrix, the main character learns that the world he lives in is fake and is living in a manufactured world.

Production and Marketing Techniques:

Science fiction movies use special effects to create futuristic worlds and make the story feel real. They use computer-generated images to show things like spaceships, robots, alien planets, and advanced technology. These visuals help the audience believe in things that don’t exist yet. Lighting also plays a big role bright colors, glowing screens, and deep shadows help set the mood and make scenes feel intense or mysterious. Sound effects like breathing, beeping, or silence build suspense. Some Sci-Fi directors even build their own sounds in their movie.  custom while music often mixes electronic and dramatic tones to match the action or emotion. Science fiction movies are marketed to teens and young adults who enjoy action, technology, and futuristic ideas. Posters often show glowing lights, spaceships, robots, or high-tech cities to grab attention and set the mood. Trailers use fast music, dramatic sound effects, and exciting scenes to highlight the coolest parts of the story, like space battles or time travel. These films appeal to people who like science and big questions about life, and the marketing focuses on making the future feel thrilling and real..

Film Samples #1:                                                   Blade Runner 2049 is a prime example of science fiction because it doesn’t just show advanced technology, it asks what that technology means for human existence. The film takes place in a dystopian future where replicants (bio-engineered humans) are used for labor and survival, raising questions about what makes someone truly human. Its setting features neon-lit cities, polluted landscapes, and holographic ads, all of which reflect the genre’s fascination with futuristic environments and social decay. The story follows K, a replicant who begins to question his own identity and memories, leading to a search for truth that challenges the boundaries between man and machine. This theme of post-humanism, where artificial beings develop emotions, desires, and agency, is central to modern sci-fi. The film also explores surveillance, corporate control, and environmental collapse, which are common concerns in the genre. Its sound design and visual effects enhance the mood, using silence, echoes, and synthetic tones to create a haunting atmosphere imaginative storytelling.

 Film Samples #2: Avatar is a groundbreaking science fiction film set in the mid-22nd century on the alien moon Pandora, where humans mine a valuable mineral called unobtanium. The story follows Jake Sully, a disabled former Marine who uses a genetically engineered Na’vi body, called an avatar to explore Pandora and connect with its native people. As he learns their ways, he begins to question the human mission and fights to protect the planet’s ecosystem. The film blends futuristic 

technology like avatar transfer, floating mountains, and military aircraft with deep themes about colonization, environmentalism, and identity. Its use of advanced CGI and 3D effects helped redefine visual storytelling in sci-fi, while its emotional core and world-building made Pandora feel real and immersive. Avatar embodies the genre by imagining new worlds, exploring ethical dilemmas, and using science and technology to drive both conflict and transformation.

During our sound lesson and videos, I learned how sound can shape mood, tell stories, and add realism. We explored layering, timing, and how different effects create atmosphere.

🏀 Sound Project #1: Buzzer Beater Basketball

For Sound Project #1, my friend and I created a basketball scene where the main character hits a buzzer beater shot. We brainstormed realistic court sounds like sneaker squeaks, ball bounces, crowd chants, and the buzzer itself to build tension and excitement.

Our outline helped us organize the sequence from pre-game ambiance to the final celebration making it easier to layer and time each sound effect. We used Clipchamp to edit because it offered built in sounds and simple tools for layering and adjusting audio. I enjoyed the dramatic buzzer moment, but next time I’d like to add more sound variety and reduce repetition.

😒Sound Project#2: Bored With Sound

For Sound Project #2, my former teammate and I created a soundscape that represents boredom—like walking through school while time slowly passes. We started by outlining which sounds matched each moment, such as footsteps for walking, a ticking clock for time passing, and slow music to reflect the mood. 

We used Clipchamp to edit the project because it made it easy to layer and time the sounds. I liked how the effects were placed and how the timing matched the visuals, but next time I’d like to use higher-quality sounds to make the scene feel more realistic.
